C Bird Labs

Dedicated to the preservation, study, and enjoyment of Long Island’s Birds

The C Bird Labs, or the Caro Bird Research Initiative, collaborates with existing nature preserves and private citizens in Long Island to protect local bird populations, conduct non-invasive research and educate local residents about birds.

What do we do?

Cultivate: We partner with local residents and existing organizations to plant and cultivate bird-friendly environments.

Investigate: With the participation and support of local residents, we conduct non-invasive research on local birds to investigate how they live and what helps them thrive.

Educate: We run programs to educate residents about local birds and our research.

DONATE

Donate to Long Island’s Birds!

In 2025, our goal to partner with existing organizations and private residents (that’s you!) to plant bird-friendly micro-forests that supercharge bird populations.

Micro-forests, some times called “pocket forests” can be as small as one square yard and they supercharge bird populations by giving local birds places to live and good things to eat.

Our goal is to plant 100,000 square yards (about 15 football fields) of Micro-forests in Long Long Island by 2030.

These sites supercharge bird populations and add to an area’s natural beauty. Read the science behind our methods here.

How many square yards of micro-forest can you sponsor?

Georgina Emerson is a teacher and a nonprofit organizer. She is eager to draw on her administrative and teaching experience to help Long Island’s birds.

Ms. Emerson is the founder of Teach About Women, a nonprofit dedicated to changing the stories we tell about women and power in classrooms. Since 2018 she has been giving workshops and presenting at schools across the United States to showcase ways to integrate women into history programs. She holds a BA in History and an MA in Comparative Literature from Dartmouth College and a Master’s Degrees in History from L’École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. She lives in Brooklyn with her wife, the scientist Shana Caro, and two dogs, who both identify as feminists.Follow her on social media @TeachAboutWomen or read her blog
Shana Caro is developing new methods for measuring and evaluating the health of local bird populations. She is excited to draw on her extensive training and research to supercharge Long Island’s bird populations through the planting of micro-forests.

Dr Caro is an evolutionary biologist interested in social behavior – particularly in how signaling systems evolve when there are evolutionary conflicts of interest between signalers and receivers. Using parent-offspring signaling in birds (begging) as a framework, she investigates how ecology and life history traits affect communication both across and within species. She is also interested in the neural mechanisms governing social behavior, maternal investment in eggs, and maternal/paternal effects on offspring behavior.
Dr Caro holds a BA from Harvard College and a DPhil from Oxford University.
